Why Nike Training Club?
In May 2014, I received information regarding a job opportunity as a Nike Training Club trainer at the University of Toronto. After talking it over with my family and boyfriend, I decided to apply. I told myself that job was mine, and I would be the best for the position. My interview was on a Friday early June 2014 and I received a call the following Monday night at 6pm saying I got the job. Life has been a whirlwind since and I have never looked back.
Prior to the interview, I had honestly never heard of Nike Training Club. So, I did some searching online to come across the Nike Training Club app and learnt all about it. Now, being a trainer for over a year and a half, I am proud to say that U of T now offers four classes per week for students and members and it is one of the most popular drop-in fitness classes offered here!
Everyone who knows me has either heard about my classes or experienced them first hand, but for those of you who need a little more convincing, I’ve put together a list of my top reasons to join the Club.
- So easy! If you are using the app, workouts use little to no weight, and are divided up by skill level and length of workout. It is easy to navigate to find a workout suited to your needs and experience. My most favourite part of the app itself is that it has videos of each movement. This helps to minimize injuries and encourage proper form and technique throughout the workout. Workouts can also be done anywhere at any time; making it even easier to get those workouts in.
- Fast-paced, high-energy. I specifically choose upbeat music and try my best to keep the class moving. Unique to Nike Training Club is what we call a holding pattern. This means our rests are activity recovery with a simple movement in between intervals to keep the heart rate going and participants moving at all times. When you are using the app, you can also set it to play your own music. That way, you will always have songs that help to pump you up during the workout
- Challenging. Although you are able to pause on the app (and yes some of those workouts are killer), our live classes offer challenging exercises for everyone who attends. Whether it is your first day or 100th class, you can push yourself beyond where you thought you were capable.
- A community. The inspiration for this post came after last Monday’s class. A participant came up to me after the class ended and said “Rachel, I just want you to know how you have created such a great community for us here”. Those few words have stuck with me this entire week. My goal each time I step in front of a class is to encourage, motivate, challenge, and inspire. It has been a wonderful and truly inspiring experience for me, not only to have the opportunity to do so every week, but to also watch participants work together and encourage one another to reach their goals. I can guarantee that you will not find another class around where you will feel more welcomed, yet pushed past your limits to always leave better than when you first walked in the door.
Fitness is all about creating an atmosphere where you can succeed. We do just that here at Nike Training Club. I hope to see you out in my classes Mondays at 5:30pm and Thursday at 7:10pm at the Goldring Center for High Performance Sport. I am here to help you become the best version of yourself.
Be fierce. Be strong. Be vibrant.
