Active Aging with Pilates
Over the last several weeks and months, it seems that most of my clients are recognizing the need to be able to move well physically as they age. They are creating more time for themselves as their kids have gotten older and they have more time to put the focus back on themselves. Others are retiring or have grandchildren they want to be able to keep up with. Some enjoy traveling and want to be able to walk all day and explore new cities and countries. No matter what the reason is to move, I love being able to support people and be their guide to get them there.
While today I want to share the benefits of Pilates for active aging, I want to recognize that strength training is also extremely important and should not be neglected. We can move our bodies in a variety of ways for different benefits. If strength training is of interest and you are unsure where to start, please reach out at any time.
It seems that no one quite knows what to expect when hearing about Pilates. They think it’s yoga, or only done on machines (reformers). Pilates is a mind-body connection class and currently my offerings are done on a mat with the use of small props/equipment.
Benefits of Pilates include:
Understanding of mind-body connection to implement into other activities or workouts
Improved balance and single sided strength
Increased mobility of hips, shoulders, and spine
Strengthened muscles of inner and outer core units
Ability to get up and down off the floor with more ease
Improved stability in shoulders and hips - especially weight bearing movements important to be able to push yourself up off the floor, your chair, etc
Improved posture and body awareness
Transferable skills to be able to apply to daily living tasks and sports
Improved breathing techniques and core connection
What to expect in a class with me:
Oftentimes when people are exploring a new type of movement, they are nervous because they are unsure if they will be able to do it. My philosophy is to make each movement work for you, and not the other way around. That means that I’ll provide a few different options for every movement. For those with individual needs or injuries, alternative movements will always be provided. The goal is to make every person that shows up feel confident and competent with the movements.
How to move with me:
If you are local to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, I currently offer an in-person Mat Pilates class on Thursdays at 9:45am at District Dance Company. Click here to book your class.
If you are not local, or can’t make it out on Thursdays, click here and check out my on demand platform. You can choose Mat Pilates Only videos or get an All Access Pass, and move with me from anywhere, at any time.
No matter how you choose to move your body, I encourage you to find something you enjoy. There are benefits to a variety of movement types, but the ones you look forward to most, are most likely the ones you’ll continue to do and get the most out of.
Yours in self-discovery,
Rachel
